Antimicrobial Resistance Coordinating Office

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global public health threat. In November 2017, the National Strategic Action Plan (NSAP) on AMR was jointly formulated by the former Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA); the Ministry of Health (MOH); the National Environment Agency (NEA); and PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency. The plan provides a roadmap of existing gaps and priorities for intervention, and sets a framework for the national response to AMR across the human, animal, food and environmental sectors.

The NSAP aims to strengthen multi-sectorial efforts to combat AMR across five core strategies: (1) Education; (2) Surveillance and Risk Assessment; (3) Research; (4) Prevention and Control of Infection; and (5) Optimisation of Antimicrobial Use.

The Antimicrobial Resistance Coordinating Office (AMRCO) was established in August 2018, to oversee the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the NSAP on AMR. AMRCO also provides secretariat support to the National Antimicrobial Resistance Control Committee (NARCC) and its expert panels, and to the One Health Antimicrobial Resistance Workgroup (OH AMR WG).

Today, AMRCO works with the human, animal, food and environmental sectors and other key strategic partners to drive progress in reducing the emergence and prevent the spread of resistant organisms under each core strategy.
