National Public Health and Epidemiology Unit

The National Public Health and Epidemiology Unit (NPHEU) at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) supports the Ministry of Health (MOH) in the prevention, surveillance, response, and preparedness to deal with communicable disease threats by:

  • Providing the evidence base for National HIV and TB Programmes and national strategies for the prevention and control of communicable diseases; 
  • Providing long-term horizon scanning and risk assessments on infectious threats for clinical and public health practice guidance; 
  • Conducting national surveillance and audits on healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and infection prevention and control; and 
  • Strengthening the linkage between expertise in public health and epidemiology and policy development.

 


NPHEU monitors and interprets local infectious disease trends. These diseases include Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Tuberculosis (TB), healthcare-associated infections, and infectious diseases of public health importance in Singapore. NPHEU does this through disease registries, surveillance programmes and research.

Through horizon scanning of international literature, NPHEU harnesses best-available knowledge to inform evidence-based clinical and public health practices in Singapore.

In addition, the Unit's operational roles in the national responses to HIV and TB protects Singaporeans from these infections. By working closely with  national and international partners, NPHEU provides public health and epidemiological insights that helps Singapore prepare for, prevent against, and respond to infectious diseases.
