Diagnosis and virus suppression rates of HIV improved in 2017

MOH's statistics showed that there has been an improvement in the diagnosis and virus suppression rates for HIV in 2017. It is estimated that 77 per cent of people living with HIV are diagnosed and know their HIV status, an improvement from the 72 per cent in the 2015 cohort estimates. 98 per cent of those on treatment achieved viral suppression, an improvement from the 94 per cent in the 2015 cohort estimates. However, of those diagnosed with HIV, 86% are on sustained antiretroviral treatment, which was lower than the 2015 cohort estimates of 89 per cent. The report also noted that Singapore adopts the United Nations' 90-90-90 target and seeks to raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of HIV. Professor Leo Yee Sin, Executive Director of the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, explained that the decrease in those on HIV treatment could be due to the use of new methods of calculation in recent years. Prof Leo also said that even though the HIV diagnosis and suppression rates are encouraging, Singaporeans need to have greater awareness of HIV, and to make it more convenient for infected patients to go for tests. The report noted that Prof Leo called on all Singaporeans to create a conducive environment together and encourage those at risk to promptly go for HIV tests and receive proper treatment if required.
