Beyond safety considerations, NCID wards are designed for efficiency and flexibility. The ward design is roughly triangular in shape for better line-of-sight of patient rooms and greater efficiency. Its interior design is functional with accent colours of nurse alcoves identifying the entrances of each room with different colours used on different floors. Also, the ward design features a modular concept to enable future conversion of one type of ward into another with minimal renovations and without impact to the major structures.
